Plastic Free Project Update

Our Plastic Free Letchworth Campaign is gaining momentum. We are now registered with Surfers Against Sewage Plastic Free Community project and Letchworth Garden City is on their map. We are busy planning our public launch event in Leys Square which will be at the Farmers Market on the 21st April. To mark Earth Day on the 22nd April we will be holding our first litter pick.

The children’s art competition at the Letchworth Festival is going to be themed on ‘Plastic Free Letchworth’. Click here to find out how your school or youth group can take part.

We have asked local business if they can take a few minutes to complete our questionnaire, to share their opinions and ideas on how we can reduce the use of plastics locally. We have already been chatting with some businesses and have found out about some exciting changes.

  1. Broadway cinema have started to offer paper straws in place of plastic, and will soon have fully biodegradable cups, which they’ll use for coffee. The Broadway have arranged a screening of “A Plastic Ocean’ for June 19th at 7:45pm so click here to book your tickets.

  2. Bamboo Turtle have opened up in the Arcade, selling food, washing and beauty products that can be put directly into your refillable containers. They also have alternatives to everyday items like dishcloths and storage pots. A really exciting and timely addition to our town.

  3. David’s bookshop have moved to paper straws and wooden stirrers and the bookshop is planning to move to paper bags. They have also signed up to the refill app.

  4. Garden City Brewery have moved to paper straws and wooden stirrers and signed up to the refill app.

Do come and see us on Earth Weekend and help us create a Plastic Free Letchworth.
